So last Thursday dawned grey but still and the forecast was promising so headed with my fishing mate up country to a spot we had fished a few years ago. Beautiful water in stunning country with big fish. That day I had landed one and him 2. I should have said big fish and spooky fish! The sun struggles to break the cloud cover as we headed upriver, blind fishing the likely lies without so much as a nibble. Thankfully spotting improved and the wind merely became a gentle breeze.
A couple of hogs turned their noses up at our offerings before I spotted a beaut hugged close to the bank in a large, lake-like pool. A couple of other fish were also cruising nearby. It was my turn to take a back seat and watch as a large bow, must have been about 7lb, inhaled the dry in slow motion. She must have seen a few fisherman in her time however and already had a back up plan, launching herself into the weed. No way she was going to be pulled free and the whole leader was lost in an attempt to get her free. My turn next, a black gnat taken by a rising fish, my trigger on the nymph-fishing setting and excitement too high however as I pulled it straight from the jaws of said fish. It rose a couple more times before spooking. 3 more hook ups in total, 1 to me, all of which failed to hold and the hook spat after a brief tussle (better that way than a break off in my mind) and a few spooked told the story of the rest of the afternoon before the norwest picked up and it was time to head home.
Getting back to the car I discovered my net had fallen off my bag, its last known sighting at our turnaround point. With a bit of time pressure to get back, I ran all the way up-river without finding it (wading boots don't make running over tussock too easy!) only to find it tucked in a hollow 20 meters from the car on my return! So no fish but good company and overall a great day. Sure to be back and fingers crossed might even land a fish too!
