Re: Leader design
Not sure what Johnno uses, but I just use a regular clincher knot. That way you can learn to tie the one knot really well and there are three of the exact same knot in your system.
Iv used tippet rings for a few years now and wouldn't use anything else, although iv only ever used a single one at the end of the leader to tippet connection.

What he said, the Double Clinch. It’s effectively tying to an eye of a hook.
I’ve only got about four knots I use, the surgeons, blood, double clinch and a slip knot for streamers.. oh and nail knots for leader - line if required.

Re: Leader design
THANKS GUYS . I USE THESE KNOTS WITH A BIT OF EXTRA DETAIL .
THE SURGEON KNOT - I ALWAYS DO 4 INTER TWISTS . LUBRICATE AND CLOSE SLOWLY
THE CLINCH
https://www.animatedknots.com/improved-clinch-knot
I ADD AN EXTRA FINAL TURN THROUGH THE 2nd LOOP - LUBRICATE AND CLOSE SLOWLY .
WHEN I FIRST STARTED ON FLY I WAS LOSING FISH WITH POOR KNOT WORK . I FOUND DOING THE ABOVE STOPPED THAT NONSENSE .THANKS AGAIN .

Re: Leader design
TIIDDLER doing a 4 turn surgeons does not necessarily make it stronger. In fact it can make it weaker, it really comes down to the tippet material and thickness. What works with one, will not work with the other as it were.
Its worth doing your own testing before hitting the water. Material type and size will have an impact on what works with which knot, and how many turns.

Re: Leader design
Improved clinch or uni/grinner for me... depends on what I fancy tying.... probably uni/grinner more often than not..
Any knot that you confidently tie for your tippet/fly not is fine
