New Taupo regulations

The new fishing regulations for Taupo are out. From: http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recrea ... july-2017/
Changes to size limit, bag size, fly line length and leader length are clear enough. The other changes regarding tackle fall into the trap of trying to prescribe an anglers intent, as well as what is actually legal, and the result is as clear as the Tongariro in a 1000 cumec flood.
(a) No person fishing for trout in waters reserved for fly fishing (as set out in the Schedule) shall add to or attach to any fly line, leader, or fly:
• any bare hook, spinner or bait;
• anything made from lead, glass, plastic, or other material to facilitate casting or to increase the buoyancy of the line; or
• any sinker or other weight

(b) but may attach a strike indicator and may add weight to the leader to facilitate sinking. Weight added to the leader may only be in the form of split shot made from lead, bismuth or tungsten.

So, (a) is perfectly clear; you are not allowed to add several materials to your line to facilitate casting, nor in deed ANY OTHER WEIGHT (for whatever unspecified purpose you might have had in mind).

But then (b) goes on to say weight added to the leader may be split shot made from lead bismuth or tungsten.

These two statements are obviously contradictory on the face of it.

But let me be generous for a moment, and suggest that what they are driving at is (a) you are not allowed to add any weight to facilitate casting but you are (b) allowed to add split shot (and nothing else) to facilitate sinking.

Thus, while you may add as much shot as you like (and load up a hook with a gape of 14 mm less as well), you are not allowed to add anything else that “weighs”. Micro rings and micro swivels used to join leader segments must by definition (they “weigh”) be included in this banned category.

Do others consider this interpretation is correct, and what do they think of them?

I agree, very confusing. :shock:
Just sent DOC and email askingthem to explain themselves.
