Old Eyes and a clip on Magnifying Glass

Post by peelproductions » Sun May 01, 2016 10:04 pm

Hi All,
Whats everyone/anyone using for magnifying on small flies (18-22).
Ive been looking around trademe and ebay but nothing really looks suitable.
Its either all medical and expensive, or something you wear.
This was the only one that maybe like what i need:

http://www.trademe.co.nz/building-renov ... 523903.htm

I just want something simple and cheap that you can attach to the vice or desk.
Steve has one on the site thats about $80,but hes sold out at the mo and I need asap.(also at $80 seems a wee bit expensive for the odd fly i tie.)
Thanks,
JG

I just use the magnifying glasses from the WH. Try the 2 or 3X ones. They make a huge difference

Great bit of kit. Main magnifier and a smaller high magnification for the tiny tiny flys etc.. Sometimes wished the stand was a little taller, but easily fixed by putting a thick book or box under it.

Im starting to look into making a specific fly tying bench. If so will probably mount one of these on it. http://www.jaycar.co.nz/Tools-%26-Solde ... p/p/QM3548

3 or 5 dpt. Id have to have a play to decide which one to go with.

Oh and as Johnno said a pair of reading glasses from WH will make a hell of a difference.

Trust me once presbyopia sets in, then a good magnifier is worth its weight in gold, so paying $150 isnt that much to be able to actually see what your doing.

I have to wear glasses all the time and use flip up magnifiers for both fly tying and for tying on flies on the river. Steve has these in stock at about $15. However they are no good without glasses to clip them onto. Before I wore glasses I used to use magnifying glasses from the $2 shop and these were okay.

Oh il add that i have those stick on magnifiers on the inside of my fishing glasses, as well as carrying a pair of reading specs.

I don't use the reading specs all that much, but been a volunteer ranger i feel its a little rude to leave my sunglasses on when interviewing to people, but it would be even more embarrassing if I cant read there licence and proof of ID.
